New Ethics in Journalism
Using the 'Holocaust' Metaphor
Summary:
Ingrid Newkirk (CEO of PETA made the decision to release a controversial campaign comparing the murder of animals to a genocide using the phrase "Holocaust on Your Plate". PETA is the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals and is known for their controversial ideas from the past. Many people in and out of the Jewish Community are offended by this campaign as well as whole countries. Germany banned this campaign from there country as well as the European Court of Human Rights.
Opinion:
I believe that this campaign should not compare the Holocaust to animal slaughter. I believe this because it is extremely offense to communities of Jewish people and others who were involved in the Holocaust. I also feel like they are comparing animals to people which is considered dehumanization and is very unethical.
Aaargh! Pirates! (and the Press)
Summary:
The Ting Ting's new album was leaked on month before it was released. Music news sights such as The Rolling Stones and Billboard covered the story on this incident but also included a link to find the leaked music. The music industry has been struggling with problems with illegal file sharing which make the community not consume these files through purchases .
Opinion:
I think that when covering stories like these the author should not include a link or any way to get to the illegal files. Although, I do believe it is ethical to publish stories that share the information of the event and make people aware that its out there. I think this is fine because its only a share of information and its a personal choice to listen to the illegal files.
Publishing Drunk Drivers' Photos
Summary:
The Anderson News begins to publish pictures of convicted drunk drivers weekly rather then names. There theory is that this will scare drunk drivers off there streets to keep them safe. On the front page of one issue its states,"HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR, but please don't drink and drive and risk having your pictures published," hoping to put this theory in place.
Opinion:
I think that even though this policy has good intentions but it is still unethical to post pictures in the local news of drunk drivers. I believe this because by publishing these pictures it could ruin someones life for something they've done in the past. Don't get me wrong drunk driving is a serious offense but not enough to embarrass the people who have done so. I also think that a name in the paper is fair and still teaches these people a lesson but a picture is bigger and easier to spot in a paper then a name.
