Portraits and Self-Portraits Introduction

2. Play with Eye Contact

It is amazing how much the direction of your subject’s eyes can impact an image. Most portraits have the subject looking down the lens – something that can create a real sense of connection between a subject and those viewing the image. But there are a couple of other things to try:
A. Looking off camera – have your subject focus their attention on something unseen and outside the field of view of your camera. This can create a feeling of candidness and also create a little intrigue and interest as the viewer of the shot wonders what they are looking at. This intrigue is particularly drawn about when the subject is showing some kind of emotion (ie ‘what’s making them laugh?’ or ‘what is making them look surprised?’). Just be aware that when you have a subject looking out of frame that you can also draw the eye of the viewer of the shot to the edge of the image also – taking them away from the point of interest in your shot – the subject.
B. Looking within the frame – alternatively you could have your subject looking at something (or someone) within the frame. A child looking at a ball, a woman looking at her new baby, a man looking hungrily at a big plate of pasta…. When you give your subject something to look at that is inside the frame you create a second point of interest and a relationship between it and your primary subject. It also helps create ‘story’ within the image.
17. Introduce Movement
Portraits can be so static – but what if you added some movement into them? This can be achieved in a few ways:
The key with the above three methods is to use a slow enough shutter speed to capture the movement.
The alternative is to have your subject obviously move fast but to use a shutter speed so fast that it ‘freezes’ their movement.
18. Experiment with Subject Expressions
In some portraits it is the expression on the face of your subject that makes the image.
Get your subject to experiment with different moods and emotions in your image.
Environmental Portrait
I like these two photos because they seem so natural as if you are standing right behind the camera. I also like how these people are just going on with their everyday lives which gives you inside into who they are and what they do.

Casual Portraits

I like these portraits because I like the lighting and background of both of them. I also like how it is focused on the subject and both photos don't look extremely uptight.
Self Portraits
I like these self portraits because they both give a different perspective on the person. I especially like the mirrors because of the infinite portrait he has created.

Paragraph:
For my portrait I think I'm going to do an environmental shot of my grandparents because of the amount of culture they have and they both have such big stories to tell. Although now that they are older they don't do much but I think it would be cool to get some of the scars from my grandpa's open heart surgery which shows what he has been through. For my self portrait I want to incorporate other people since I am a people person. I also want to use soccer because it is my passion. So I could possibly do something with a goal post or a ball or the field. What will make these successful is good lighting and time to accomplish what I envision.

C.E. #4.2

1. What is the potential direct impact on goods if a 20% tariff was placed on goods coming into the United States from Mexico, if President Trump is able to push that legislation through Congress to pay for his proposed Border Wall?
Potential direct impact on goods from the tariff will pay for the Wall that Trump wants to build on the Mexican- American Border.

2. What are the three exceptions that Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez would not require a judicial order or warrant to enforce any ICE detentions requests? Page A1 "Travis sheriff stands firm..."

Three exceptions include inmates who have either been charged with or convicted of capital murder, murder, aggravated sexual assault or human smuggling.

3. Why did the Austin City Council approve a six-month pilot program to allow amplified music later at night than ever before in the Red River District? Page B1 :Council extends Red River live..."
The Austin City Council approved a six-month pilot program to collect data on how much extra hours would help struggling music venues or how it hurt the neighborhoods with complaints of noise.

4. What is so unique about how Stitch Fix operates its business? Page SA1 "When an algorithm is your stylist"
Stich Fix operates is business by using data and stylists to find the best clothes that a customer would like and sends it in a box to the customers door.
 5. Where would you take a date for Valentine's Day from the list in the story inside Austin 360 page 8 and 9?
I would like to take a date to Blue Dahlia Bistro.

Long Response

Problems of building the wall include getting funding, destroying communities, bad for environment, and almost impossible to build a wall in that many places. Trump wants the wall to be built because he thinks that Mexicans are coming here illegally, causing problems, and are criminals. Those are all super rare because most people who come here from Mexico are looking for a better life that they can't get in their country. I think that I will see a lot of news coverage on the wall but I don't think it will change anything because it is extremely unnecessary. I think the wall is a bad thing because families will be divided, it is a waste of money because there is already patrol on the boarder, and it will be bad for the environment and won't help Americans or Mexicans in anyway. I don't think it will be built because the amount of time and money that Trump needs to build this wall he will not receive. I also think that a lot of people will protest any progress moving towards the wall. In my opinion no one should pay for the wall other then Trump because the wall is stupid and useless. Ultimately I think Americans will pay for the wall because Mexico will definitely not pay for it.

Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO

Aperture
F2.8

F16

  1. The part of the body that is closely related to aperture is the pupil of our eyes
  2. The smaller the aperture the less light present in the picture and the larger the f stop . The higher the aperture the more light present in the picture and smaller the f stop.
  3. Aperture affects depth of a picture when the aperture is lower the background becomes blurred making the subject prominent when done correctly. It can also do the opposite.
Shutter Speed

Fast Shutter Speed

Slow Shutter Speed

  1. Bulldogs & Hotdogs with sun
    1. medium shutter speed
    2. medium shutter speed
    3. fast shutter speed
    4. fast shutter speed
    5. slow shutter speed
    6. fast shutter speed
  2. Bulldogs & Hotdogs with no sun
    1. slow shutter speed
    2. slow shutter speed
    3. fast shutter speed
    4. fast shutter speed
    5. medium shutter speed
    6. fast shutter speed
  3. You can put your camera in "Aperture Priority" mode which allows the camera determine the shutter speed and you manually set the aperture. Another way to do it is "Shutter Priority" mode which allows the camera to determine the aperture and you manually set the shutter speed. The last way to do it is setting camera in "Manual" which gives the photographer full control of the camera.
ISO

ISO 6400

ISO 200 & ISO 3200

  1. The advantages of shooting at a higher ISO at a sporting event is that it will allow the picture to be higher quality due to the lack of light.
  2. The author suggests to use low ISO as much as possible and when there is a good amount of light.
  3. The author suggests to use high ISO when there is not enough light to create the image in a short amount of time.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

A.
As technology advances it makes it easier to alter and change images to create something other then the truth. The big debate is, is it ethical to alter a photo and depict it as the truth? Another question that comes up is how should this tool be used and who's incharge of making limits and rules. Most people will agree that is unethical to publish anything but the truth.

B.
The biggest reason for why people manipulate photos is to get a bigger consumer response, for example photos in tabloids. The Washington Post and The New York Times have rules for each of the photos that are submitted. The first rule is the photographer must submit the manipulated photo with the original one. Another rule is the original color of the photo must stay.

C.
I think it is ethical to do small touchups and small amounts of cropping and levels to enhance a photo but the second it changes the truth I think is unethical. I think once this happens the photo becomes a lie and causes confusion and misperception of the event that is happening in the photo.

D.
kerryfonda123
I think this is the most unethical photo because it is changing the events that have actually happened. This photo is lying about the location and actions of both of the subjects.

F.
Kim Kardashian was featured on the cover of Complex Magazine. The original cover (left) was leaked. The photoshopped version (right) is on newstands now.
I think this one is the least unethical because the changes that were made were very little. I think that it is still unethical to change the way a women looks drastically to make her fit certain standards. In this photo though the change is very little and Kim still looks like Kim.

5 predictions for TECH in 2017 are Twitter will become less popular, Amazon's Alexa will receive some backlash, Apple's products will get worse before they get better, Uber and lift back in Austin by summer, and AmD acquisition rumors revived.

Long Response:
I actually won't be in school during the inauguration because I am going to D.C. to protest at the Women's March. I definitely will watch the innaguaration to see how stupid Trump is and all the ridiculous things he may say or do. I have been keeping up with everything on social medias especially since that's all my mom talks about. My response to what I'm seeing is honestly disappointed in the fact that we chose such an idiot president. I think it is ridiculous how Trump treats people and protects his ego at all costs. I also think its crazy that Russia is even a problem in relation to the president and it has brought so much scandal and conflict. I feel worse about our president now that even after he's elected has continued not to cooperate and continues to say the most offensive and unethical things. Both my parents share the same or similar beliefs as I do and they deffinetly have not shifted away from the opinion that Trump is am idiot and that he is unqualified to be in the president position. From them is where I hear a lot of news and I also hear NPR all the time around my house year round so I pick up a lot of news from there.

Composition 9/11

Framing
I chose this picture because the destroyed buildings frame the firefighter climbing the ladder.

Lines
I chose this picture for lines because the lines of the building show the direction in which the subject is falling.

Rule of Thirds
I chose this photo for the rule of thirds because the subject (The hurt man) is on the third making you focus on the right side of the picture.

Simplicity
I chose this picture for simplicity because the picture is not busy and focuses on one thing which is the destroyed remains of 9/11.

Balance
I chose this picture for balance because there is a balance between the buildings and the amount of smoke along with the two buildings which crates symmetry.

Avoiding Mergers
This picture depicts a merger in which the tree and other people are merging. This is not a good photo because it is busy and makes the subject unclear.

Best of 2016

Best Song of 2016:
I think the best song of 2016 is Smoke Break by Chance the Rapper ft. Future. I think this because Chance is an extremely talented artist who just realized his first album in which it became very popular. I also like how the song is really mellow and never really gets old. Even though it is a newer song it is by far my favorite song of 2016. I also like how you can listen to it really loudly and it sounds ten times better.
Image result for moana

Best Movie 2016:
I think Moana was the best movie of the year because it is another Disney princess movie but I like how this one is different and she's not so much a princess but more a strong women. I also like the colorfulness of the movie from begging to end which makes it really fun to watch. The best part of the movie is the soundtrack because the songs are the best things ever and they are all really catchy. I listen to all the songs right after I saw the movie.

Most Important News Story of 2016:
I think the most important news story was the one about Barack Obama visiting Hiroshima in Japan. I think this because it is a positive story that shows something that is monumental but also progressive. These days most news stories are about tragedy or something bad that happened but I like how this story is something positive. I also like how it highlight Obama and his progress with other countries because he is an amazing president. I also think it is monumental that these two countries are trying to make amends after what had happened and reflecting on WWII.

Most Important Person of 2016:
I think the most important person of the year is Obama. I think this because he is my favorite person and this was his last year as president and he has done some amazing things this year in foreign affairs and many other fields. I think he is extremely important to this Nations progress and the way we run as americans today. I also think he's important because he's a really good person as well as an amazing president. I also think that he has contributed to the year greatly which makes him important.

Most Important Sports Person of 2016:
I think the whole entire Olympic Women's Gymnastics group is the most important sports persons of this year. I think this because they won an insane amount of gold medals for the US. I also think that are important because they have inspired many little girls to follow and conquer there dreams. They are all very good role models and pride of the United States.

My Holiday:
One thing I will remember about my holiday is staying up til' 5 am with my best friends and lighting sparklers on new years eve. My resolutions for 2017 is to run a lot more then I already do and to always be in shape for soccer. I am looking forward to 2017 because it can't be any worse then 2016.

Best Photos of 2016

An ecstatic Hillary Clinton celebrates at the conclusion of the Democratic National Convention where she accepted the nomination in Philadelphia, on July 28, 2016.
I like this picture because it shows a lot of emotion and captures the genuine happiness of Hilary Clinton and the people who surround her. I also like the color in this picture and how you can look at this picture and it's like you are there in the moment this was taken.
Britain's Queen Elizabeth arrives at a service for her 90th birthday at St Paul's Cathedral in London, Britain, on June 10, 2016.
In this picture I really like the contrast of color between the subject and the floor and how the pattern on the floor really makes the simplicity of the yellow dress pop. I also like how it is a really simple picture with very little components making it look very composed and neat.
Turkish supporters of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan celebrate in Taksim Square after the coup attempt in Istanbul, Turkey on July 16, 2016.
I really like the one main color in this picture that overcasts over all the subjects and matches the flag they are flying. I also like how the color makes the chaotic picture seem more simple and calm just due to the presence of a single color.
